BEFORE THE BULLDOZER
A Nottingham allotment site destined for change
Hedgerows & Avenues
The hedgerows on the site amount to over 6 miles. The developers plan to reconfigure and reorientate the new plots, so although some outer hedges may be retained and improved, those between plots will be removed and replaced with post and rail or post and wire with possibly some native hedging in parts. These changes will take a number of years to attain maturity.
Hedgerows and their herbage are a vital asset to this green space. They provide a berry larder for over-wintering birds, a nectar source for pollinating insects – vital to gardeners -. shelter for small mammals and birds, and a larval site for some butterfly species. Hedgerows also provide commuting corridors for badger, fox and bat – all of which use the site.
